It's exciting seeing the crowd at the "Panther Walk" getting bigger each week! (The Panther Walk is at Gate E, approximately two and a half hours before the game.)

The excitement becomes palpable as the band arrives with the spirit team. The crowd claps and moves to the music as the band starts to play. The buses arrive and the Panthers make their way through the "spirit tunnel" of enthusiastic fans and family members who greet them with hugs and encouraging words. Video below of Panther Walk, with special guests: children from the Make a Wish Foundation.
It was a beautiful crisp day for tailgating! My group and I enjoyed the Alumni Association's Game Day Tailgate event! Pounce joined the spirit team in rallying the crowd! If you're not a member, you should consider joining the GSU Alumni Association! Video below:

Here come the Panthers! The "tradition" of the Panther's entering the Dome has become well established during our second season!
This shaky video starts out on my son, then focuses on Matt Weller, the official "Kickoff Kid" for the first kickoff of the game. Matt is my "adopted grandson," as the son of my children's childhood babysitter, Julie Weller.
It was impressive seeing approximately 1,000 musicians on the field! Area high school students joined our awesome Georgia State Marching Band for our half-time enjoyment.
Let's WIN the next two! Hope to see you in Livingston, Alabama on Saturday! GO PANTHERS!

As a GSU Alumna and Lifetime Georgia State University Alumni
Association member, everything is Blue and White for Amanda Scott,
Guest Blogger. She sports blue hair extensions, and drives the blue
PantherMobile! Amanda is a Panther Athletic Club Gold Donor,
President's Society Legacy Circle Member, Heritage Society Member,
and Society Partners Circle Member. She supports the Spirit Program,
and is a season ticket holder for four GSU Sports!

After packing The PantherMobile, I left Atlanta around 9:30am after
picking up a student who
wanted to attend the game. The drive to
Orangeburg, South Carolina was approximately
4 hours. We need
students at home games, but we also need them at our away
games, so
I will never turn away a student who wants to accompany me to an away
game!

there were not many
Panther Fans present. Most fans sitting in the GSU
section were parents of the
players. I did recognize a couple
of faces
proudly wearing their blue gear!
Our spirit groups were not present. The Jacksonville State
game is the
only away game that our spirit groups were scheduled to attend this
season. I missed the band,
cheerleaders and Pantherettes, and Pounce.
For the first time this year, I can say I was proud of our team.
The
Panthers showed improvement on the field, especially defense.
Opinions of the game: Though some may disagree, with Drew
Little out
of the game, Kelton Hill shined over Bo Schlechter. After Bo’s
performance playing Murray State and his performance during this game
(interception at goal line), he is NOT the answer to the quarterback chaos
we
are facing. Donald Russell was a
star, scoring a nine yard touchdown
in the third quarter, putting GSU back in
the lead. Clearly, our offense
needs work. Though we ultimately lost to GCSU 23-13, I witnessed
improvement from the defense.
After the game, Bill Curry loaded the bus and I had a chance
to speak
with him alone. It is a moment I will never forget. I looked him in
the eyes
and said, “Bill, I just want to tell you how proud I am of the team
today. I
saw improvement from the guys and though we lost, I am not walking
away embarrassed.” Tears started
to fill his eyes as he softly responded,
“Thank you so much Amanda, we still
have a long way to go.” I could see
the exhaustion in his face. I could feel his pain. And for the
first time this
season, I didn't have that gloomy feeling in the pit of my stomach,
wondering if the football program will survive!

Game Day Musings from an Old Cheerleader (GSU vs ODU)
The following is a repost from the Game Day Thread in Panther Talk's Football Forum. I didn't want it to be buried, because I think some Panther Fans may need a little "cheerleading" from an old college cheerleader!
GAME DAY MUSINGS FROM AN OLD CHEERLEADER (GSU vs ODU)
I feel a "soap box moment" coming on!
I feel everyone's pain, but I'm optimistic, and excited, for a lot of reasons!
WE HAVE FOOTBALL AT GSU!
My son, Blake #18 is on the team, enjoying that time Bill Curry talks about "in the Huddle" where Blake, and the other players, are learning the athletically inspired meanings of teamwork, commitment, and true friendship.
I, and a lot of others, had a REALLY good Game Day experience today! The excitement in the Dome was contagious. (OK, only when "something big" was happening. But, still...it's a start!)
The football department/alumni are doing an outstanding job coming up with promotions and giveaways, and providing activities, food, and places to gather. Those who take advantage of the tailgating and activities have fun! Even with the swings and ferris wheel, there were plenty of unused spaces in the Orange Lot. I, personally, am thrilled that Greyhound, The Varsity, J. Christopher, and all the other sponsors, are willing to provide FREE food and fun activities for Panther Fans. They certainly could have spent those promotional dollars in other ways. So, THANK YOU to all who are trying to provide an exciting Game Day experience for GSU fans.
In the bathroom after the game, I talked to two students who were lamenting how "early" the game was after a late night out. They said most of their friends had just slept in. I remember those sleep deprived student years. It made me think that maybe later start times would help student attendance. Just saying....I hope we're considering that...
I agree with the "glass is half full" philosophy: Today was just ONE loss; not the end of the program! To respond to some other comments in the Panther Talk Football Game Day thread about the football program: I KNOW Georgia State has a "real" football team, and is on the way toward cementing a solid football tradition, because I'm seeing and hearing from some really rabidly loyal Panther fans! If we did not have a bona fide, up-and-coming football program in the works, we would not be inspiring "Real" Fans!
I attended Grad School at GSU, but dare I admit here that my undergrad degree is from the University of Florida? Trust me, I speak from experience: I know authentic fans when I see them! I've seen plenty of vocal Division I--nice and not so nice--fans. SEC fans are notorious for their fervor!
I know "die-hard" Florida fans who bleed orange and blue and love their Gators win or lose. I also know "fair weather Florida fans" who are happy when the Gators are winning, and whining and complaining when they're not. EVERY team, even former National Championship teams have bad games--even multiple bad seasons!
GSU had a winning first season, and we have only played two games in our second season! Florida's First 17 years yielded: 85 W, 37L, and 9 ties. For Georgia's first 17 years, they won less than half their games! GA is just around 50% "lifetime" wins with most of their major rivals! Rivalry Record Link.
If we continue to cultivate our alumni, the students, and the community at large, OVER TIME, we will achieve the level of play, loyalty and attendance numbers we are working toward. AGAIN, THIS IS SEASON TWO, and we ARE competing with long traditions of loyalty to Tech, Georgia, Auburn, etc.. We are also competing with other sporting events (including children's leagues), and any number of community events and festivals.
Let's try to look at all the "good stuff" and give our Panthers the enthusiastic fan support that will encourage them to rise to our expectations! With all the hours and effort our team, coaches and support staff are putting in, they DESERVE our support! There is nothing like cheering fans to inspire athletes! I hope we'll have a good showing of support at Jacksonville State!
OUR PANTHER FOOTBALL TEAM is counting on US just as much as we are counting on them! Go Panthers!

GSU Has WINNING Inaugural Season!
Today's 23-17 win over Lamar puts Georgia State up by two games, and thus ensures GSU a WINNING INAUGURAL SEASON. Now, even if we happen not to beat BAMA, we'll still end up with a winning season! YAY PANTHERS!
Our Panthers kept things exciting for the fans, right up until the end of the game! Here are some photos of happy team members with family, friends, and fans, taken this afternoon, before, during and after our last home game of the 2010 season!

Before the game, our GSU Marching Band and Drum Line set the tone for a festive game day experience. Here is a short video of the drum line.
The band was awesome at halftime, as they filled the field and played with "guest students" from several Georgia high schools. Thanks to the Band, Flag team, Cheerleaders, and Pantherettes, for your contributions to the overall Panther Football Experience!
Thanks to the TEAM, Coaches, and Support Staff for all your hard work!
Thanks to Athletic Director, Cheryl Levick, the athletic department staff, sportscasters, film crew, and all others who work "behind the scenes."
Special thanks to the Dome Personnel, concession workers, and clean up crew. This season couldn't have come together without everyone's help, (including the students and their athletic fees! A BIG thanks for those!)
For the last year, it seemed like this football season would never get here. Now, it seems as if our Inaugural Season has flown by! I'm looking forward to next year, already!
As a football parent (Blake Wyatt, #18, OLB, Special Teams), I have enjoyed getting to know the players and their family members. I've also enjoyed meeting other FANS! (Video clip of one of Blake's special team plays I captured today.)
Together, we have watched our team make history, and together, we are on our way to an even brighter future for GSU football! Let's spread the word about the fun, excitement, and entertainment we've enjoyed this season, so next year's experience, and crowds, will be even better!

Saturday, November 6th: Last Home Game in Georgia State's Inaugural Football Season!

It has been an exciting Inaugural Year for Georgia's newest college football team, the Georgia State University Panthers! The experience has been first class all the way! All home games are played in the Georgia Dome, with the final home game this Saturday, at 1 p.m. The team is on track to finish with a winning season!
My son Blake, #18, is a defensive back. As a "special teams" player, Blake was fortunate to be on the field for the First Ever Kick-off, of Georgia State's First-Ever Football Game against Shorter, and he has played in every game since! (Blake is in the middle of the line, on the far right in the video, jumping up just before the kickoff!)
The atmosphere in the Dome, where all our home games are played, has been electric! When the cheerleaders yell "G-S," the crowd responds, with unbridled enthusiasm, "U!" My "cheerleading voice," dormant since my college cheerleading days, has been reawakened! Everyone is learning the cheers, learning the players' names, and taking ownership of "our" new team!
As the brand new Georgia State University Marching Band takes the field, pre-game, and begins to play, the Dome comes alive! The band forms a lane, through which the football team enters the Dome, and as the cheerleaders and flag bearers run onto the field, ahead of the team, the crowd goes wild! We are ready for some FOOTBALL!
Everyone is learning the new Georgia State Fight Song, written in the spirit of traditional Division One fight songs. The music gives the Fight Song a strong sense of history, and the lyrics give it an "edge!" ("We're from the A-T-L, we're gonna' give 'em hell!")
This weekend is GSU's last Home Game. The Panthers are playing the Lamar University Cardinals, from Beaumont, Texas. We have the next week off, then play our final game of the season on Thursday, November 18th, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, against last year's National Championship Team at The University of Alabama! How about joining me in praying for the safety of both teams, and an UPSET victory for GSU! Hey, it could happen!

There are a bunch of great guys playing on the team. Coach Bill Curry, and the rest of the coaching and support staff are class acts. Even I, one of the least dedicated sports fans you will ever meet, have fallen in love with the Georgia State Panthers! (The hugs I get from lots of the players, after the game, as "Blake's Mama," are nice, too!) |
